Obsidian Journal (Diary, Antique Notebook) Peter Pauper Press 0706151305840 Books Reviews
I purchased two journals. I was extremely disappointed because the design on the covers is not actually gold foil, as it appears to be in the photo when you zoom in. It's more of a dull tan color just printed on with no gold at all. I read the description again to try to understand where things went wrong. I read, "Sophisticated design features iridescent highlights, raised embossing, gilded-gold page edging" and "Its gold-tooled decoration consists of tiny dots instead of solid lines." It was tiny dots - like from a printer. So, TECHNICALLY, gold foil was not mentioned anyway in the description. I do not think the design qualifies as iridescent. I did not return the journals because I will still use them. However, let the buyer beware that the covers are not gold foil embossed. I will be looking for this detail when I buy a different brand.
I purchased this looking for a pretty journal-type book where I could stick photos and other items relating to my children's first few years in it. It worked perfectly, the whole book is now full of pictures, cards, birth announcements and notes! It's held up really well too, even though it is now about twice the width that it was before!
The cover is super sturdy and looks exactly the same way as it does in the picture. The (160) pages are lined, and are a light yellow colour, and are edged with gold. There is a little black ribbon attached to the spine which is great for keeping place when you are working on something. The journal itself is just a little under 10 inches in length, so the perfect size to pop in a handbag for journaling or sketching on the go.
I was looking for a journal that could be considered a "vintage" style, and they did a great job with this one. It's well-made, true to the images and description and will last for ages.
I bought this and another journal from Peter Pauper Press. Both are nice, but this one falls short of the other one. The design is pressed into the cover, but the gold doesn't make it into all the indentations. In fact in a couple places the gold and the impressions don't line up at all. Compared to the crisp design of the other journal I bought I can't justify giving it more than 3 stars. It's over all not a bad journal, and Peter Pauper Press certainly has some fantastic products, but this journal is not one of them. If you can look past the cover though, the pages are nice, but then again, the pages of the other journal are just as nice and cost the same amount as this one.
I bought this lovely journal as an add on to get my order to the free shipping level.
I am currently really into journalling and I thought, "For $8, this should be a decent journal." When I got it...I was pleasantly surprised! It appears to be well constructed and user friendly; two things I look for in a journal. In addition to that...it is GORGEOUS! Even my husband was admiring it.
I haven't used it yet; I'm finishing another journal; but I can't wait to use this beautiful journal! To hold it makes me think of fanciful, far away lands full of splender and magical things.
My only concern is if the paper will hold up to the colored pens I use; LePens. They don't bleed through most papers but this paper is unlike any I've used before. We'll see.
*The pages DO hold up to the LePens and the Stabilo 88 (.4 mm) I recently started using!*

Beautiful design, though the somewhat faded black could be a bit more uniform in color, rather than textured. The outside is smooth, but you can feel the golden design when you trace your finger over it. The pages are also gold on the side, and when you touch that part, you do get a little shine on your finger, but only very little.
My biggest issue is that the black ribbon bookmark left marks on the few pages it was stuck between. It must've been pressed really tightly since there are outlines on those pages, as you can see in the picture.
Otherwise, this is a really lovely notebook to use for a journal, note taking, etc. Overall, I'm happy with the purchase and this company's notebooks (this is my second one from Peter Pauper Press). I would recommend it.
I think I have at least ten of the Peter Pauper Press journals in this series based on old European designs. I love the old world elegance of these journals at such a reasonable price and this one is no exception.
This book is a black gold-embossed journal modeled after one from 17th century France. On the cover there’s a four leaf clover surrounded by a four point star made out of flowers, vines and scrollwork. That in turn is surrounded by another intricate design of lines and more scroll work. What I also love about these journals are the spines aren’t plain but the design is carried over to those too.
The inside covers are in gold and there’s a built-in black ribbon bookmark. There is a cover page that has Journal written on it and there’s room to add your name, year or a note if you so like. The journal has 160 lightly lined pages. I didn’t have any issues with ball point or fountain pens bleeding though the papers. The pages are a thick enough texture to keep that from happening. The journals’ pages are always made from acid free archival paper so they are of a high quality. It’s a good size at 6.25 x 8.25 inches.
This makes a great journal for a diary, sketch book or just a journal to jot down notes or write stories or poems.
For the money this is a beautiful and well made journal. It looks like it was made like an old school hard bound book. It has a beautiful matte black finish. It not only is a pleasure to use but it is also beautiful to look at on a desk or on a bookshelf. The pages are nice and thick great for any kind of pen except for a sharpie-it will bleed through. The best of all the journal lays flat!! Nothing is more annoying than a journal that won't lay flat. I highly recommend this. You can't go wrong.
